The Indian Head cent, also known as an Indian Head penny, was a one cent coin produced by the United States Bureau of the Mint from 1859 to 1909. It was designed by James Barton Longacre, the Chief Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint. For collectors, the Indian Head Cent. From 1859-1907, the Indian Head cent was struck only at the main U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, and these coins bear no mint mark. During the final two years of the 1859-1909 series, the Indian Head cent was struck at San Francisco with an 'S' mint mark in addition to Philadelphia. The scarcest and most valuable Indian Head cent. Brown Indian Head Cents. Brown Indian Head cents come in on the opposite end of the color scale. If Red Indian Head cents are the least common, then Brown (or BN) Indian pennies are among the most common. Most old copper coins, as they age, tend to turn brown or green.

  • Though Lincoln now graces the American penny, there have been several other incarnations of the cent, the best known being the Indian head penny. The longest running version other than the Lincoln cent, its introduction in 1859 replaced a penny the size of the modern half dollar.
  • Designed by James B. Longacre, Indian Head Cents have six key dates that that are notable to collectors. While the series began production in 1859, the first variety to be considered key today is the 1864-L. The “L” mintmark on this coin refers to the designer’s last name, rather than the production location.
